Doughboys Café is a bakery and a full service restaurant serving everything from mac and cheese to red velvet cake.

The menu is extensive and the portions are large enough for two people to share one meal. Entrees run in the $9.95 range.

If you’re in the mood to indulge, Doughboys’ beefy mac and cheese defines the ultimate comfort food item. Think of it as a re-vamped version of Betty Crocker’s Hamburger Helper. First of all, it comes in a huge soup bowl and is topped with caramelized cheese.  After breaking the first layer of cheese, you dip your spoon into this cheesy-tomato sauce with chunks of ground beef and macaroni. Every bite is a gooey and cheesy. If that’s not enough, it’s paired with a toasted buttered baguette on the side—major carb fest. Guilt never tasted so good.

A sandwich is always a good choice too. At Doughboys, they are massive and come on a French baguette that they make at their bakery location on Beverly Boulevard.

The muffaletta sandwich is a sophisticated version of a salami and cheese sandwich. First, a black olive tapenade is spread on each side of the baguette giving the sandwich balance between salty and acidity.  Then, it’s stuffed with soppressatta salami, fontina cheese, and arugula. It’s delicious but I can only imagine what that combination would taste like substituting the salami for prosciutto. Yum!

For the roasted chicken sandwich, a sundried tomato pesto is spread onto a baguette and then goat cheese and whole toasted pine nuts are layered on top of the sliced chicken breast. The goat cheese isn’t too strong but acts as a good contrast in flavor that allows the pesto stand out. Whole pine nuts exude a creamy and buttery taste adding to the overall flavor of the dish.

All sandwiches are served with either macaroni salad or coleslaw; don’t come here expecting French fries because you’ll get no for an answer. Instead they offer a spread of taters, including, naked ones. The naked taters are sliced into a coin shapes and fried in oil. These are on the greasy side and are a bit under salted.

Feeling like a bowl of soup? The tortilla soup is made fresh daily and doesn’t come with any bread. It’s vegetable medley with carrots and celery mixed with shredded chicken in a tomato flavored broth. It’s then topped off with a pile of cheese and cilantro. It comes with fried corn tortilla strips already in the soup but you might want to order these on the side because they tend to get soggy.

After engulfing a Doughboys’ meal, you may or may not find any room for dessert.  If you’re a fan of red velvet, they have a great recipe. They don’t serve it as a slice but rather bring out a mini round cake layered with vanilla frosting sprinkled with red sugar.

If you’re not a cake person, they also make apple and blueberry pies in house.  The crust is both buttery and flakey creating a perfect crust. For the apple pie filling, tart Granny Smith apples are combined with a touch of cinnamon and sugar for balance creating a delicious apple reduction. Each pie comes out as a mini pie in it’s own round foil pie pan making it the perfect size for two.

Doughboys’ is definitely worth giving a try.  A word of advice-- make sure you go hungry!

Doughboys’s is located at 8136 West 3rd Street. Los Angeles; (310) 852-1020
