My Studio, a Hollywood nightclub where 20-somethings in skin-tight dresses usually abound, took on a slightly different function and clientele this Friday night, though loud music was still a key component.

Up-and-coming musicians, designers and artists filled the dimly lit night spot, for promoter Mike Palermo’s event Creative Collision. Palermo teamed with event hostess Emilia Carlo to merge local artists and LA’s nightlife culture. It was an interesting mix.

Artist Keenan Chapman’s oil paintings of icons like Bob Marley and Dizzy Gillespie lined the wall above the club’s black leather VIP booths, where affluent patrons usually spend upwards of $1,000 on bottle service.

The middle of the front dance floor was turned into a stage where a short lineup of new music acts performed their relatively unknown songs.

“I eat doughnuts man, I eat doughnuts,” rhymed female rapper Sibley during her short set. With a blonde Mohawk and short shorts, Sibley captivated and confused the audience with her random lyrics and high energy.

Shortly following Sibley’s performance were two members of Disbursed Collective, a team of hip-hop/pop producers, song-writers and performers.

Vocalist Lord JAG and rapper Kevin Hicks performed the group’s newest song Blacked Out, which is said to hit local radio stations soon. The tune merges JAG’s sultry talk-singing with Hick’s punching lyricism and tells the story of a guy who spends way too much time in clubs like My Studio, and can’t remember the next day. (To hear more of Hicks' music, check out his other band PUSH.)

“We’re doing a producer driven album that goes off on tangents,” said founder and producer Frank Nebula of the unsigned group. Hicks added, “We’re putting out record after record, but making sure the music is quality.” The group said they plan to shoot the video for Blacked Out in the next two weeks.

Following the eclectic concert was a fashion show by the design group Art or Die. Models wearing chaotic layers of colorful apparel rounded the bar and weaved their way through crowds of My Studio’s regular clientele, which had begun entering the club.

This art-meets-nightlife mash-up happens every month and the next collision will be at Geisha House on May 12. If you’re into art and mixing up the night scene a little, then Creative Collision may be the party to crash.
