A strike may be headed to Southern California grocery stores. The union representing local grocery workers plans to ask its 60,000-plus members to authorize a strike, the Associated Press says. The strike would affect Ralphs, Vons and Albertsons. Workers there have been without a contract for six weeks.

  • The mayor’s job guru has put himself in the race for Villaraigosa’s job when he is termed out in 2013, The City Maven reports. Austin Beutner stepped down as first deputy mayor Thursday, joining what is sure to be a crowded field.
  • California is closer to mandating that the contributions of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people be included in school text books. A bill requiring the additions passed the state Senate Thursday, the AP reports, and must now clear the Assembly.
  • And finally, this is going to take longer than we thought. City hall may not give its final approval to a downtown stadium for a year, the L.A. Times reports. AEG hopes to have a stadium built in time to host the 2016 Superbowl.
