The DWP will slash its budget by more than $400 million, the L.A. Times reports. A three-year hiring freeze will be put in place, resulting in the loss of about 500 jobs over the three years as positions go unfilled. A number of administrative perks were cut, as well as the popular Holiday Light Festival at Griffith Park.

  • KPCC went down to watch trains being tested on the Expo line and found some anxious people waiting for the fall opening.
  • The Giants fan who was beaten on opening day has brain damage, the L.A. Times reports. The father of two will face a long recovery, doctors say. The reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspects has grown to $100,000.
  • Graffiti and a bottle of merlot?  Via Neon Tommy: a local wine company is incorporating graffiti art into their bottle design.
