Gov. Jerry Brown slashed some more from the state budget Thursday. His target this time was a $356-million death row facility, the Los Angeles Times reported. The cancelation of the project will save the state $712.5 million over 25 years.

The Metro Board held its monthly meeting yesterday. Among the highlights: bikes will now be allowed on all Metro trains during peak hours. The Source and Streetsblog Los Angeles have more on the meeting.

Vernon, oft-criticized as an industrial fiefdom, is on step closer to disappearing. The state assembly voted Thursday to dissolve the tiny city, says KPCC.

A whopping 16 candidates have registered to vie for former Congresswoman Jane Harman’s South Bay seat, the Los Angeles Times reports in a profile of the race. It looks like no candidate will win a majority, so things should get interesting, the article points out. Under California’s new election rules that could mean two Democrats facing off in the final July election.
