Neon Tommy had the pleasure of speaking to Shane Lawlor, lead singer of the band Electric Touch, over the weekend.

Originally a UK native, Lawlor met the other members of Electric Touch while he was touring with another group.

Now, the band—originally from Austin, TX—is coming out with a second album. Here’s what Lawlor has to say about:

The thematic elements in the new album:

“The new album, it picks up where the last one left one… It's stories from ordinary life really, but in technicolor, using every ounce of passion that we've got. It's a very honest record, a rock'n'roll effort.”

Working with Howard Benson (music producer who’s worked with everyone from Kelly Clarkson to My Chemical Romance):

“It's amazing, absolutely amazing. It's great working with such an immense talent. He has been making great records for many years. Yeah, it feels nice being part [of his list of clients]!”

Whether or not recording the album in L.A. influenced the final product:

“It really did, to be honest. We kinda got the West Coast vibe, and we ended up moving and living to Los Angeles. It's such an amazing city, from Beverly Hills to downtown to the beach.”

Returning to L.A.:

“You kinda compete, you have to bring your A-game! There’s so many other bands, so many options. But I can't wait to play the songs that we recorded there, it's going to be brilliant.”

Playing Coachella and the Vans Warped Tour:

“It's excitement, it's nerves… Once you step out there, once your foot hits the stage, your soul just takes over. It's different when you step out on the stage. It's the most intimidating thing, playing for thousands of people, but you gotta get over it and just play.”

Changes in the live show since the band’s beginning:

“We're a 5-piece now, it's a little more varied than things before… it's definitely a bigger show and a better show than it was before. You're always trying a little harder every day. It's not drastically different, it's a rock'n'roll show, but it's a little bit more refined.”

His most anticipated acts for Coachella:

“I’d love to see The Strokes, and Duran Duran. A lot of great bands are playing, but those two are just so incredible. You do meet a lot of famous people, so you try to y’know, grab a beer with people before a show.”

The movement towards downloading music online versus buying records:

“Certainly, as one individual, it's out of my control… There's no way I could really debate that [movement]. We're a part of nature, and things are gonna take their course. Things are gonna change, the good will out. Playing great songs, playing great shows… that's really important to us. We put time into the artwork, the whole thing, with the record. But if you don't want to do that, then hey, it's free will, you know man!”

Social media and connecting with fans:

“When we were younger, rock'n'roll stars were a mystery, y'know. There's a high price to pay for anonymity… Lady Gaga, she's brilliant, she reaches out to her fans, but she still retains a star quality. For us, it's just a great way for the fans to keep in touch with us. You only get an hour, half an hour on stage in towns… We embrace everything that happens technology-wise.”

Possibly taking the tour international:

“I’d like to think so. America's definitely number one on our list, every band’s “teenage dream” list, but Europe is right up there. I think after the new album comes out, we'll have the chance. It's one step at a time.”

Electric Touch will be playing at the Three Clubs in L.A. this Thursday before heading to Coachella this weekend. They’ll be playing the Vans Warped Tour beginning in late June.
