Recapping Day 1 of the 2011 Pac-10 Men's Basketball Tournament

(All Men’s games are being played at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.)
Game 1: Beavers Dam Cardinal Surge
Oregon State 69, Stanford 67
Recap: After a five-year drought in the Pac-10 tournament, OSU finally broke through Wednesday and notched a W under its belt.
The Beavers held Stanford to a horrifically low 11.8 percent shooting from the field, but the Cardinal managed to stay in the game with defense. The first half ended with the score 26-18 in favor of OSU.
The second half played out a bit differently. Stanford came out and shot much better, but the Beavers held off the Cardinal’s second half surge to earn a 69-67 victory.
Quote: "It’s been a while and it sure feels good. That was a toughness win, a gutsy win, people making plays when you had to.” – Craig Robinson, Oregon State head coach
Player of the Game: Jared Cunningham (Oregon State)
Cunningham led the Beavers with 24 points, 15 of which came from the free throw line (he was 15-of-20 from the line). He was able to stave off the Cardinal’s push at the end of the game by hitting some clutch free throws. When the game came down to the last play, Cunningham prevented Stanford’s Jeremy Green from getting a final shot off.
What it Means: With this win, OSU (10-19) has its first conference tournament win under coach Craig Robinson. This also means they will be facing the No. 1 ranked Arizona Wildcats (25-6) on Thursday.
Game 2: Ducks Shoot the Lights Out Against Sun Devils
Oregon 76, Arizona State 69
Recap: The Ducks sent a message to Arizona State Wednesday, showing them they didn't forget the loss the Sun Devils handed them at the end of the regular season. Oregon hit 11 shots from beyond the arc on its way to defeating ASU 76-69.
The Ducks opened the second half by hitting four 3-pointers in the first six minutes of the half, extending their lead over ASU to 20.
The Sun Devils rallied back, but they were never a real threat to the Ducks. They cut the deficit to seven in the final minute, but it was too little, too late.
Quote: “Coming off four losses, we came in wanting to play really aggressive.” -- Oregon forward E.J. Singler
Player of the Game: E.J. Singler (Oregon)
Singler led the Ducks with a career-high 22 points, shooting 8-of-12 from the field, and 4-of-5 from 3-point range.
What it Means: The win broke a four-game losing streak for the Ducks (15-16), and also allowed them to avoid a season sweep at the hands of the Sun Devils. They will now face No. 2 ranked UCLA (22-9) on Thursday.
