Former Arkansas Governor and potential 2012 Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee falsely claimed in a radio interview on Monday that President Obama grew up in Kenya. Huckabee made the claim while talking about how the President's growing up in a foreign country would affect his worldview.

"I would love to know more. What I know is troubling enough," Huckabee told New York radio station WOR. "And one thing that I do know is his having grown up in Kenya, his view of the Brits, for example, very different than the average American."

He later added: "his perspective as growing up in Kenya with a Kenyan father and grandfather, their view of the Mau Mau Revolution in Kenya is very different than ours because he probably grew up hearing that the British are a bunch of imperialists who persecuted his grandfather."

Obama's father was Kenyan, but the president was actually born in Hawaii and spent part of his childhood in Indonesia. He did not visit Kenya until he was in his 20s, well after his father past away. Obama wrote extensively about his childhood and his visit to Kenya in his book, "Dreams From My Father."

Huckabee's spokesman told Politico on Tuesday that the Governor misspoke:

Governor Huckabee simply misspoke when he alluded to President Obama growing up in ‘Kenya.’ The Governor meant to say the President grew up in Indonesia.”

“When the Governor mentioned he wanted to know more about the President, he wasn’t talking about the President’s place of birth – the Governor believes the President was born in Hawaii. The Governor would however like to know more about where President Obama’s liberal policies come from and what else the President plans to do to this country – as do most Americans.

Obama's birthplace has been a source of controversy during his presidency, with so-called "birthers" claiming that Obama was born in Kenya and thus does not meet the citizenship requirement to be president.

In the past, Huckabee has been critical of those who believe Obama was born in Kenya, telling Good Morning America recently that the issue was nonsense.

"If there was any shred of truth to it, Hillary Clinton and her wonderful investigative opposition research machine would have found it and would have used it," Huckabee told host George Stephanopoulos. "For Republicans to even be bringing it up, I think it's a waste of energy and time."
