L.A. Today: Rain, Buses, And More

Spring is here, and it arrived with a bang.  Floods, evacuations, road closures, rock slides. Hopefully the week will clear up, but more rain is due later this week

Researchers are studying the possible effects of a massive tsunami on the California coast in the wake of Japan’s giant wave, the L.A. Times reports.  A set of recommendations will come out of the study.  The small wave that hit California after the Japan quake caused $44 million in damage in California, the paper said.

Metro is looking to cut bus routes by a significant amount, which has the Bus Riders Union furious. The group has asked the Federal Transit Administration to examine if the cuts discriminate against minorities and low-income transit users. The FTA has obliged.  The Times has a nice overview story over the issue, and the ongoing debate of bus versus rail as Los Angeles expands its transit network.

And finally, in a slightly amusing, but also inspirational story: a 400-pound sumo wrestler completed the L.A. Marathon Sunday. The feat makes Kelly Gneiting the heaviest person ever to complete a marathon.
