California's drought is officially over, well almost. The state is expected to lift a 3-year drought declaration Wednesday, the L.A. Times reports.

  • LAUSD is expected today to change its reading program to a less rigid lesson plan, the Daily News says. The district hopes the move will improve scores among English learners, whose performance is far below native speakers. LAUSD has the largest number of English learners in the country, the article notes.
  • Now this is just sad: Newport Beach is considering a library without...books. Literary works would instead be picked up through a Netflix like system, the L.A. Times reports.
  • But with the future of books looking bleak, independent sellers actually got a slight boost recently. Some stores have actually seen more traffic since Borders closed, Neon Tommy reports, sending the chain's customers back to smaller, independent shops.
