James Franco’s David Letterman appearance on Friday will tell us that he didn’t mean for his night at the Oscars to go so poorly, that’s just the way it goes sometimes.

People who claim that he was stoned are apparently in the wrong now.  He just says that being next to Anne Hathaway means you look unexcited.  “I think the Tasmanian Devil would look stoned standing next to Anne Hathaway,” he said.

Letterman’s an old soul when it comes to having a hard time hosting the Academy Awards.  In 1995, he got trashed as being one of the worst Oscar hosts of all time.

The two joke about their equally critic-demeaned appearances on Tinseltown’s biggest night and Franco seems to be handling it well.  “Let me ask you a question…what the hell do you care,” asked Letterman, regarding the criticism.

Now we can all go back to talking about his impending Ph.D and teaching position at NYU.
