Homosexuality first appeared in Egyptian culture around 2400 BCE. Yet, after thousands of years, same-sex couples still raise heated debates in society. In 1996, The United States of America took action against gays, passing the Defense of Marriage Act, allowing states to not recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states. Back then, only 27 percent of Americans supported same-sex marriages. However, in the past fourteen years, the number of supporters has risen to a stunning 42 percent. The Pew Research Center tries to address the reasonings behind this as they analyze how factors such as political views, religious affiliations, generational gap, race and gender affects a person’s opinion of gay marriage over the years.
