Jerusalem suffered its first serious bombing attack in years, Wednesday, at 3 p.m. local time when a bomb exploded in a crowded public area killing one person and injuring others.

It was the first bombing in Jerusalem since 2004, according to Reuters.

The one death currently being reported was a 60-year-old woman who was injured by the blast and later died of her injuries at the hospital, according to Reuters.

However, there seems to be some uncertainty as to the number of people injured by the blast.

The Los Angeles Times reported that 25 were wounded in the explosion, while CNN reported that the blast wounded 50, Reuters reported at least 30 people injured, and ABC reported simply “more than 20.”

The attack may have been in response to strikes made by the Israeli military Tuesday that killed four Palestinian civilians, according to Reuters.

No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, but Palestinian Prime Minsister Salam Fayyad condemned the bombing.

"It is disgraceful... and greatly damaging to the struggle... that there is still a Palestinian party that insists on these actions and the disgraceful scenes under empty slogans that are no longer valid for our people," said Fayyad, according to CNN.

Israeli Prime Minster Benjamin Netanyahu delayed a trip to Russia until he was able to consult with security officials, but still planned to leave later in the day, according to Reuters.

President Barack Obama condemned the attack in a brief written statement that can be read on the White House website.

“I condemn in the strongest possible terms the bombing in Jerusalem today, as well as the rockets and mortars fired from Gaza in recent days. Together with the American people, I offer my deepest condolences for those injured or killed.  There is never any possible justification for terrorism. The United States calls on the groups responsible to end these attacks at once and we underscore that Israel, like all nations, has a right to self-defense.  We also express our deepest condolences for the deaths of Palestinian civilians in Gaza yesterday.  We stress the importance of calm and urge all parties to do everything in their power to prevent further violence and civilian casualties.”

Israeli police have raised their state of alert to the highest possible level in the country following the bombing and rocket attacks in the south.

Given the deterioration of peace talks in the region recently, many Israeli and Palestinian civilians may be left fearing a return to the violence that pervaded the area from 2000 to 2007.
