Dissidence in Labor Unions
The recent labor strikes in Wisconsin have caused quite a stir about workers’ rights and how they have been thoroughly tested in the past. The Pew Research Center presents interesting statistics from 1981: When President Ronald Reagan fired a whopping eleven thousand employees from the Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization—because they led a strike against the federal government. Back then, the majority of the public opinion leaned towards the government’s side, with even 60% of laborers’ families’ votes against their household moneymakers’ strikes. Today, that number against workers seems to have waned, as seen in the data regarding Wisconsin’s strikers. A recent Pew Research Center survey revealed an 11% difference in the votes between workers vs. government—with the workers in the lead.
