Charlie Sheen: A No-Win Situation

What else can society do to highlight a self-proclaimed “bitchin’ rock star from Mars”? Put him on a magazine cover? Boring. Send him to the couches of Oprah? Not yet. Give him a reality show with Gary Busey called “From 80s to 8 balls”? I think I’m going to trademark that!

Forget radio and television interviews because celebrity gossip has just hit an all-time low.

On Saturday morning, SiriusXM launched “Tiger Blood Radio,” which devoted a full 24-hours to the “breaking news, facts, fallout and career implications of the Charlie Sheen controversy.”

I am not going to give a blow-by-blow (get it) of what was said, what was revealed and subscription numbers, because frankly, it doesn’t matter. What does matter is the fact that this man, who is crumbling before our eyes, had a radio station dedicated to his Sheenisms.

Yes, when Michael Jackson passed away two summers ago, Sirius was quick to put together an MJ tribute channel. But remember, Michael is a musician and filling air-time with number one hits makes a lot more sense than 86,400 seconds of Charlie Sheen gossip.

While SiriusXM is the only media outlet that officially committed themselves to Sheen coverage, every other radio, television, blog and magazine outlet has done the same for weeks.

But why?

What kind of celebrity gossip-filled society do we live in that the demise of Hollywood royalty is more important than Gaddafi, unemployment rates and union issues?

In 2007, a Pew Research study revealed that 87 percent of the public believed that celebrity scandals receive too much news coverage. 54 percent of participants blame news organizations for over-covering it and only 32 percent point fingers at the public for paying so much attention to it.

Since then Lindsay went to rehab, Tiger Woods started a Rachel Uchitel college-fund, and Jesse James revealed his infatuation for tattooed porn stars.

It seems like Americans are more obsessed now than ever about the downward spiral of celebrity life. Advertisers and media outlets know this and exploit it.

Since Charlie Sheen first hit crazyville, many companies have and will continue to profit from him:

-When ABC’s "20/20" aired, it won the 10 p.m. time slot with 9.2 million viewers overall. The Hollywood Reporter claims the C.S. Special marked the show’s best performance in two years.

-Pierce Morgan, finally had good ratings with his Sheen interview and averaged 1.35 million viewers.

-Spike TV is going to run a half-hour animated special called “Charlie Sheen’s Winningest Moments”.

-Clothing companies are making “WWCD?” and “Team Sheen” shirts.

-He literally put a win in the records books as he set a Guinness World Record for accumulating over a million followers on his Twitter account in 24 hours.

All this coverage would be a great opportunity for news outlets to shed light on addiction, anger management, and a slew of mental illnesses. Instead we are teasing him. We are watching him go down in flames and no one is bothering to pick up the fire extinguisher.

It’s all fun and game when laughing at a man with Tiger’s blood running through their veins, but take a closer look and you can’t deny Charlie is in turmoil.

He has allegedly threatened to decapitate his soon-to-be-ex-wife Brook Mueller, will be going through a custody battle with both baby mommas, on TV interviews he looks sick and exhausted; sunken-in cheeks, huge bags under his eyes, thinning hair, very frail looking, and I really don’t know anyone who would be dumb enough to hire him until he successfully completes rehab.

No, he doesn’t have to call into radio stations or bring us into this house of goddess, but society isn’t doing anything to discourage him, in fact, we seem to be applauding this kind of behavior.

I am a fan of Charlie Sheen. "Major League" is one of my favorite movies of all time (don’t judge) and "The Three Musketeers" is a classic. As a fan, I want people to stop giving his crazy antics attention and allow Charlie to be helped.

At what point will we turn away from the Sheen train wreck? Will it be after he OD’s on drugs, or after violently attacking a female “friend”?

The media needs to stop covering it and people need to realize that this is a real man who is in danger. Yes, his life is in danger.

Stop the interviews, stop the google searches and please let Charlie reclaim his life before it’s too late.
