Building A Web Audience With Videos Is All About Trust - SXSW 2011

Thinking about starting your own video blog or Vlog? Want to eventually make some money off of it? Well so do millions other people. So how do you make yours stand out above others?
Whether you’re talking about new games, gossiping about celebrity news, or sharing political commentary one thing that all successful online videos have in common is a strong and loyal audience.
To build and maintain a healthy relationship with your audience, here are a few quick tips from Amanda Coolong of TechZulu.com from the Panel “How To Influence An Online Revolution”: Build trust with your audience by making your videos episodic; Make it interactive (e.g. live chat-rooms); and overall give them something to come back to. If you promise your audience something make sure you delivery it, Coolong said.
Along the same line of thought, Revision 3’s Chief Revenue Officer, Brad Murphy addressed his panel—Business Of Monetization Of Online—audience with efforts to make money off of the content.
Of most importance here again is trust with your audience. A “balance between yield per view and user experience” must be considered, said Murphy. In other words, don’t put so many ads on your content that it deters your audience from returning.
There are multiple options for monetizing your video content. Among them here are some that Murphy mentioned:
- Ad networks with a dedicated sales team using a cost per thousand impressions;
- Subscription model, which works well with content that’s highly in demand; and
- Host delivered ads
All of these methods should work well as long as you have an established user-base but above all else, Murphy added, “Make sure it’s the right fit for you. Don’t take all ads because you just want the money.”
