A Sacramento area elementary school principal was shot and killed this morning by the school’s custodian, local police officers announced.

The principal, Sam LaCara, 50, died at 11:17 a.m. at the Marshall Medical Center from a single bullet wound in the torso.  He was shot while in his office on campus.

The janitor, John Leubbers, entered Louisiana Schnell School in Placerville, CA at approximately 10:30 a.m. He shot LaCara and then fled the scene by foot.

Leubbers was arrested in his home about an hour after the shooting.

Leubber’s motives and the circumstances of the shooting are still unclear, said El Dorado County Fire Department Battalion Chief Larry Marinas

No students were injured, but the shooting did prompt a two-hour school lockdown.  Students were later bussed to county fairgrounds.

Some parents said the school had been trying to relieve the Leubbers for some time, adding that he was mean and grumpy toward the students.

A decision has not been made as to whether the school will reopen Thursday.
