The Oscars is Hollywood's most glamourous night - a night when stars make the sartorial selections that could land them in fashion's hall of fame forever. This year the star's evoked a Hollywood Golden Age glamour in their choice of gown, hair and makeup. Embellished and sequined dresses continued to be a trend at this year's event as well as nude frocks. Violet dresses also made a repeated appearance, best exhibited by Mila's chiffon gown. The Oscars, unlike other award shows this season, saw pops of color on the red carpet. Red and oranges were an especially popular choice, with Jennifer Lawrence, Jennifer Hudson, Sandra Bullock and Penelope Cruz all working the trend. Neon Tommy's associate entertainment editor and staff reporter comment on who made Oscar's history in 2011.

A look at the Red Carpet:

Jennifer Lawrence- Calvin Klein Collection red dress

GRADE: A

Christine: Red and simple. Safe, but nothing to write home about. Some jewelry wouldn’t hurt.

Nicole: Chic and beautiful. Hair and makeup look so simple but flawless.

Melissa Leo-  Marc Bouwer white and gold lace dress.

GRADE: B

Nicole: A little bit too Victorian in the collar for me, but the off-white lace is pretty and the silhouette is flattering on her.

Chrisitine: Melissa continues this season’s lace trend in a very classy way. Love the collar.

Hailee Steinfield - Marchesa (helped design), nude, embellished dress

GRADE: B

Christine: Pretty, but safe once again. The hair band makes it look like she’s going to her senior prom.

Nicole: Love the nude color on the skin. She looks beautiful and its very age appropriate. Her simple up do compliments it well.

Florence Welch- Valentino nude dress with lace

GRADE: B

Christine: Frilly and nude colors - exactly what you’d expect from Florence.

Nicole: Typical Florence, but she still looks wonderful.

Mila Kunis - Eli Saab lilac dress

GRADE: A+

Christine: Love it. The see-through elements could have been dangerous, but she pulls them off wonderfully. Just stunning.

Nicole: She never ceases to amaze me. Consistently proves to be one of my favorites on the red carpet. Always simple, chic and glamorous and I love the color choice on her; its not a color we’ve really seen on the red carpet that much.

Mandy Moore- Monique Lhuillier nude embellished dress

GRADE: A

Nicole: Continues the nude trend, prevalent throughout the night and other award shows this season. She looks very glamorous and the up do (another trend of the evening) elevates the look to an even chicer level. She really looks like a movie star.

Christine: Love it. She looks like she’s been dipped into glitter. Very graceful and glamorous.

Michelle Williams- Chanel eggshell white dress

GRADE: B-

Christine: Boooring. And the pearls on her dress make her look old. What happened to her fabulous dresses like the Vera Wang dress she wore at the Oscars in 2006?

Nicole: Michelle always seems to pick very simple dresses. Though none of them really stand out to me, I do have to say she always manages to pull off a chic look.

Amy Adams- L’wren Scott navy embellished dress

GRADE: B-

Christine: Lose the necklace, please!!! That combo is just awful. The dress itself is ok, though, if nothing major.

Nicole: I love the color and the sequins follow trends we’ve seen at other award shows but the neckline, sleeves and necklace ruin the look! Her hair, however, evokes classical Hollywood glamour, which I absolutely love for the Oscars.

Jennifer Hudson- Versace tangerine orange dress

GRADE: A-

Nicole: I’m obsessed with her!! She has really transformed herself. The orange is a bit of a fashion risk for the Oscars but it totally works, especially on her new phenomenal body!

Christine:
Perfect! Radiant! Brightly colored, and she’s owning her looks. Just the way you’re supposed to make an entrance at the Oscars.

Cate Blanchett- Givenchy

GRADE: B+

Nicole: I did NOT like this dress at first glance but a full look at it changed my mind. I love the silhouette and the lilac color but the circular design on the bust throws me off.

Christine:
Really? This looks more like an armour than an evening dress. What’s going on with the top?

Scarlett Johansson- Dolce and Gabbana maroon lace dress

GRADE: B+

Nicole: I like the combination of the deep maroon red, lace and the open back. She’s kind of working a bed head look as well, which I think works for her. A different look for Scarlett, but I like it.

Christine: Not sure about this one. Maroon and lace combined? And the see-throughness? No. Maybe without the high neck. Like the hair and make-up though.

Marisa Tomei- 1950 Charles James Couture Dress

GRADE: C

Nicole: I like the color but the silhouette is certainly not flatering

Christine: The dress has a good color, but that’s about it. It just doesn’t seem to fit right, particularly around her chest.

Hilary Swank- Gucci silver dress with feathers

GRADE: A+

Christine: Beautiful! And so glamorous! The perfect Oscars look! Definitely one of the best, if not THE best dress of the evening!

Nicole: Love the color and she’s showing true Hollywood Glamour with the combination of sequins and feathers.

Helena Bonham Carter - Colleen Atwood (costume designer)

GRADE: B

Nicole: Surprisingly simpler for her. Really see the 19th century influence here and I love the all black look.

Christine: Crazy as always, but not as hideous as the last few times. I actually like it, it fits her personality without being a visual insult.

Celine Dion - white, tightly fitted and long-sleeved dress

GRADE: A

Nicole: She looks stunning. Another hairstyle evoking classic Hollywood glamour.

Christine: Wonderful. Not only a perfect fit, but the hair, make-up and jewelry are just right, too.

Nicole Kidman- Dior white dress

GRADE: B-

Nicole: Not really sure about this one. I love Nicole but this detailing isn’t really working for me.

Christine: Really? White just doesn’t look too good on her, I’m sorry. She’s just way to pale to pull that color off. The dress is nice though.

Sandra Bullock- Vera Wang red dress

GRADE: B+

Christine: Like the red, but a little jewelry wouldn’t heard. Glad she chose a bright color over nude and pastel.

Nicole: Red is definitely a trend of the evening and she looks very Oscars chic. The bust could have been fitted a little better.

Reese Witherspoon-Giorgio Armani Prive dress, Neil Lane Jewels

GRADE: A-

Nicole: Incredibly elegant.

Christine: Nice, but maybe a little bit too “Barbie”, particularly with her high pony-tail.

Penelope Cruz- L'Wren Scott Red and orange embellished dress

GRADE: B

Nicole: Hot Hot Hot. She looks phenomenal in this coloring.

Christine: Um, no. The dress looks more like a dress you’d wear to the beach than a gown for the Oscars.

Gwyneth Paltrow- Calvin Klein silver dress

GRADE: A-/A

Nicole: Silver definitely seems to be one of the trends this evening. I think Gwyneth pulls this off and it works with the sleek, straight hair. It may not be a usual Oscar gown but its certainly modern and fresh.

Christine: Did she just land in from space? The fabric of her dress reminds me of those old science-fiction movies.

Halle Berry- Marchesa nude dress

GRADE: A+

Nicole: She looks absolutely stunning. It gets more and more beautiful toward the bottom.

Christine: Perfect. Just - perfect. Exactly how you want to look on the red carpet - stunning, glamorous, graceful.

Natalie Portman- Rodarte purple dress, Tiffany jewelry

GRADE: A

Nicole: I LOVE the color and she looks absolutely phenomenal and glowing with her baby bump! Her hair and makeup is also stunning!

Christine: WIN! Great color, great cut, just lovely. So vibrant!

Anne Hathaway - Valentino red dress

GRADE: A-/A

Nicole: She looks absolutely stunning. But with Rachel Zoe as her stylist, who could expect anything different.

Christine: Fabulous. Great dress, great jewelry, a perfect Oscars look.
