Girl Scout Councils To Discontinue Sales On Some Cookies

Yes, indeed, this means it’s Girl Scout cookie time.
But the 2011 season may shock some cookie lovers who look forward to certain flavors. According to the Wall Street Journal, the Girl Scout Councils are saying “adios to Dulce de Leche, no thanks to Thank U Berry Munch and farewell to a whole slew of other varieties added in recent years.”
The councils are limiting the sales to six types for the 2011 cookie season. The cutbacks may reflect the many efforts in the U.S. to downsize and eliminate extra spending. The cookie cutback is part of a Girl Scout campaign to “consolidate membership and boost profit at a time when youth organizations are struggling to keep all their girls and sell some of their cookies,” according to Derek Thompson of The Atlantic.
Girl Scout executive Amanda Hamaker said, “our top five varieties make up 77 percent of cookie sales… the others are yummy and fun, but they’re side dressing—leaving councils with an awful lot of alternate varieties left over.”
Cassie Fields, who was a Girl Scout for 11 years, says, “I’ll miss the Dulce de Leche cookies but as long as the Thin Mints and Samoas stay, it’s all good.”
The traditional Thin Mints, Samoas, Peanut Butter Patties, Peanut Butter Sandwich, Lemon Chalet Cremes and Shortbread cookies will remain.
