First Journalist Dies In Egypt Amid Continuing Attacks On The Media

Mahmoud's death marks the first death of a journalist in Egypt since protests began in Cairo last Tuesday. According to state newspaper Al-Ahram, the parent newspaper of Al-Ta'awun, Mahmoud was filming a confrontation between soldiers and protestors from a balcony near Cairo's Tahrir Square when he was shot.
AlJazeera also reported early Saturday morning that its Cairo bureau chief and another employee had been detained by Egyptian security forces.
In a report released Friday by the Committee to Protect Journalists, more than 100 attacks on members of the media or media organizations have been reported this week. The Obama administration echoed the report's feelings as White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said Friday that they're getting "very disturbing reports" of "systematic targeting" of journalists in Egypt.
