Three states--New York, New Mexico and Michigan--rang in 2011 with a change of power in the governor's office.

In New York, Democrat Andrew Cuomo became the 56th governor of the state. Cuomo was sworn in Friday night and his formal inauguration took place Saturday afternoon. He replaces Democrat David Patterson.

Republican Susana Martinez made history when she took office as the 27th governor of New Mexico on Saturday. Martinez became the nation's first female Hispanic governor during a private ceremony that took place at midnight. She replaces Democrat Bill Richardson

In Michigan, Republican Rick Snyder became the state's 48th governor on Saturday. He replaces Jennifer Granholm, a Democrat.

Saturday marked the first day of swearing in ceremonies for governors elected in the 2010 election. Thirty-seven governors were elected, with 24 filling open positions. The rest of the recently elected governors will take office in the next couple of weeks.
