SAG Awards Post Show Update
Rounding out the list of winners in top film categories were Natalie Portman for best actress in the ballet drama “Black Swan,” best supporting actor Christian Bale for the boxing film “The Fighter,” and best supporting actress Melissa Leo for “The Fighter.”
For the TV categories, Al Pacino won the best actor award for HBO movie “You Don’t Know Jack,” Steve Buscemi won for best actor in HBO series “Boardwalk Empire,” and Julianna Margulies won for best actress in CBS drama “The Good Wife.”
Claire Danes, who won an Emmy award, Satellite award and Golden Globe award in HBO film "Temple Grandin," also won a SAG award in the best actress category.
Betty White, the last surviving actress off “The Golden Girls,” is enjoying a career revival and won the best actress award in a TV comedy for “Hot in Cleveland.”
"This is the biggest surprise I have ever had in this business. I am so lucky at 89 to be working....you didn't applaud when I turned 40," said White.
Alec Baldwin won his fifth straight SAG award in the best actor category in NBC TV series "30 Rock."
Although "The Social Network" was nominated in the best ensemble and best actor (Jesse Eisenberg) categories, it failed to win any prizes at the SAG awards. The Facebook film garnered early praise and won four Golden Globe awards, including best drama. "The King's Speech," however, has won top prizes in recent award shows from the Director's Guild and Producer's Guild.
Close to 120,000 actors pick the Screen Actors Guild winners, which are seen more as a precursor to determining the individual Oscar winners than the Golden Globe Awards since many actors make up the voting group for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (the folks behind the Oscars).
The SAG's best ensemble prize is the equivalent to the Academy Award's best picture award, and hasn't been a reliable predictor of Oscar best picture winners since it has matched up only seven out of 15 years.
