L.A. Today: More Shootings, Coachella, and NFL
A school police officer was shot around noon near El Camino Real High School in Woodland Hills, and a student was shot near Bell High School. Neither shooter was a student and both victims survived.
High schools will have an increased police presence today, and all schools will remain open. The LAPD is still looking for the shooter in Woodland Hills.
Once a mainstay of the Southern California economy, the aerospace industry will take another hit soon. Boeing will cut 900 jobs at its Long Beach plant, because of fewer orders for its C-17 cargo planes, the LA Times says. Look for a swift reaction from local congressional leaders who may try to order more planes.
Los Angeles officials and AEG got moving yesterday on the company’s proposal to bring a stadium to downtown. A council committee voted to create a working group to negotiate with AEG on its proposal. AEG says it will fund the entire project. But before a team can be found, the league and players need to work out a contract.
The federal government looked kindly on Los Angeles yesterday, announcing nearly $72 million for homeless programs. The state’s high-speed rail authority also announced that $30 million in federal funding will come L.A.'s way, with a portion likely used to buy Union Station.
