Giffords Shooting Suspect Jared Lee Loughner Makes First Court Appearance

Loughner is accused of shooting Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in the head from close range at a meeting she was holding with constituents outside the supermarket. Six people were killed, including a federal judge, and 14 others were wounded in the shooting. Rep. Giffords remains in critical condition.
According to The Huffington Post:
Loughner is charged with one count of attempted assassination of a member of Congress, two counts of killing an employee of the federal government and two counts of attempting to kill a federal employee. More charges are expected. Police say he has not been cooperating with investigators.
On Monday, the FBI attempted to search Loughner's family home in north Tucson. The Arizona Republic reported on Monday that members of Loughner's family blocked authorities from accessing the house using 4-by-4 double thick plywood.
At about 12:25 p.m., agents began banging on the blockade, yelling, "This is the FBI. Let us in."
Some agents were sent behind the house, and they were able to get inside after talking to family members.
Loughner may face the death penalty, and there is some speculation that he will mount an insanity defense. His preliminary hearing is set for January 24.
