Alireza Pahlavi, the youngest son of the late Shah of Iran committed suicide Tuesday morning in Boston.

"It is with immense grief that we would like to inform our compatriots of the passing away of Prince Alireza Pahlavi," said his brother Reza Pahlavi, the crown prince of Iran, in a statement.

"Like millions of young Iranians, he too was deeply disturbed by all the ills fallen upon his beloved homeland, as well as carrying the burden of losing a father and a sister in his young life," the statement reads.

Alireza Pahlavi studied Ancient Iranian Studies at Harvard University. The prince was 44 years old. Leila Pahlavi, the late Shah's daughter, died in 2001 in a London hotel room at age 31. Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi died in Egyptian exile in 1980 following the Iranian revolution of 1979. Farah Pahlavi lives in Paris while the two remaining heirs live in the United States.
