Michael Steele announced Monday during a conference call that he will seek another term as the Republican National Committee chairman.

"Yes, I have stumbled along the way, but have always accounted to each of you for such shortcomings. I've made no excuses. I've told no lies. I have no hidden agenda," Steele said. "Going forward, I ask for your support and your vote for a second term. I believe our work is not done, and my commitment has not ended."

Steele's tenure as chairman has been called "one of the few blemishes this year for the Republican Party," and at least six Republicans have already started vying for the R.N.C. spot.

An effort to replace Steele, a former lieutenant governor of Maryland who was elected to the post in 2009, started weeks ago.

Steele's full statement (pdf) is available via POLITICO. Republican party members appear divided about their opinions on Steele's shortcomings.
