For the 21st consecutive season, the USC women's volleyball team has won an NCAA Tournament match. The Women of Troy (26-4) swept this year's first round opponent, New Mexico (20-10), Friday night at the Galen Center.

Led by All-American junior Alex Jupiter's 16 kills and match-high .464 hitting percentage, USC dimantled the Lobos 25-19, 25-8, 25-18 in a match that lasted just 74 minutes.

Jupiter also contributed a pair of the team's 10 service aces that coach Mick Haley said were key in throwing off New Mexico's offensive attack.

"I think our serving took away some of their options," Haley said. "They have been so good in the last half of the season in serve receive. Geena [Urango]'s top spin serve really hurt them tonight. She had four aces but also kept them in real trouble in terms of getting the ball to the setter so the setter could be a viable option for attack."

Urango said preparation for the Lobos' two-person serve receive pattern enabled USC to attack New Mexico beginning with the serve.

"We had watched how their serve receive patterns were a little bit different than other teams that we've played," the senior said. "We knew that top spin would be able to exploit that, so we used that to our advantage."

With the win USC advances to the second round of the NCAA Tournament where they will face San Diego, who defeated Long Beach State in three sets. The Women of Troy will be trying to advance past the second round for the first time in three seasons having been eliminated in the second round by Hawai'i the last two years.

USC will play host to San Diego with the match slated to begin at 5:00 p.m. PST.
