Senate Democrats Delay DREAM Act Vote
The DREAM Act is once again in political limbo after Democrats conceded on Thursday that they don't have the 60 votes to pass the immigration bill through the Senate. Instead, they voted to delay the bill. The move allows the Democrats to take up a version identical to the one that was passed in the House on Wednesday.
From CNN:"Senate Republicans opposed the bill, standing by their pledge to block any legislation during the lame-duck session until the chamber approves bills to extend the Bush tax cuts and fund the government."
A spokesperson for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said the vote would probably take place next week.
The Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act would give people who entered this country illegally before the age of 16 and have lived her for five years a path to citizenship. Among the requirements--they would have to earn a high school degree and make it through two years of college or serve in the military. They would also have to have "good moral character."
About 2.1 million undocumented immigrants would be affected immediately.
