Census data shows that 12 seats congressional seats have shifted, affecting 18 states and giving Republicans the edge.

The Census Bureau's findings, which were released Tuesday, indicate that Texas, a largely red state, is the biggest winner, gaining four seats. On the other hand, Midwest and Northwest states leaning traditionally Democratic will lose representation.

California, for the first time in the state's history, won't gain any seats even though its population increased by 10 percent.

Here are some of the nation's winners and losers:

  • Florida wins two seats.
  • New York and Ohio lose two seats.
  • Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, South Carolina, Utah and Washinton win one seat.
  • Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania lose one seat.

The U.S. population as a whole grew by roughly 10 percent.
