The first major storm of the season has hit the East Coast, bringing large amounts of snow and powerful wind gusts to the area while leaving thousands of holiday travelers stranded on Monday.

New York's three major airports were forced to suspend flights on Sunday night because of the blizzard-like conditions. Only of the airports--John F. Kennedy International airport--is scheduled to reopen later in the day.

The bad weather is also causing major problems for rail service in the region, with some service being completely suspended as a result.

"Transit officials said that there was no service along the entire Metro-North and Long Island Rail Road commuter rail networks as of 11:30 a.m. All New Jersey Transit trains were operating with delays of up to 30 minutes, but New Jersey Transit bus service remains entirely suspended. The Staten Island Railway is also suspended," the New York Times reported.  

At least 30 inches of snow was forecast to have hit some areas on the East Coast.
