The European Union wants to impose "targeted measures" to pressure certain people to back down from the Ivory Coast's presidential election, an EU spokesman announced Monday.

Both the incumbent president, Laurent Gbagbo, and the opponent, Alassane Ouattara, say they won the race for president, which happened a month ago. Gbagbo has even said he has alreayd been sworn in.

Some international organizations, including the Economic Community of West African States, have asked Gbagbo to step down. However, Gbagbo has accused Western officials of lobbying for military and media support of Ouattara. The incumbent has also charged his opponent with engineering the nation's civil war. Ouattara has denied that charge though.

Civil unrest between the the government-held south and the Muslim rebels in the north has recently plagued the nation. Much of Ouattara's support has come from the north.

The EU has already imposed sanctions on Gbagbo, but the details of the "targeted measures" will be hammered out in the next weeks.
