Health Care Premium Hikes Of 10 Percent Or More Face Scrutiny
Health insurance providers will need to publicly announce and justify premium increases of 10 percent more in 2011, under new rules announced Tuesday by Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.
State or federal officials could deem any increase of 10 percent or more unreasonable. This rating would have to be displayed on the insurance provider's website, but the federal government would not have the power to block any increases. Starting in 2012, the standard would vary depending on the state.
The new health care law requires an annual review of “unreasonable increases in premiums for health insurance coverage.”
