Sixty-three senators voted Saturday morning to end debate on the repeal of the military's Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy, providing a cushion of 12 votes when the legislation comes up for a final vote at noon PST Saturday.

If 51 senators voted in favor of the repeal, gays will again be able to openly serve in the military, ending a Clinton-era policy.

The Senate took a big step toward ending the military's ban on openly gay servicemembers today.

Republicans Scott Brown, Mark Kirk, George Voinovich, Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe voted to cut off debate.

Senators Jim Bunning (R-KY), Judd Gregg (R-NH), Orrin Hatch (R-UT), and Joe Manchin (D-WV) were absent.

"Today, we bring justice," said Sen. Joe Lieberman, who along with Senators Susan Collins and Harry Reid, led the charge to make the legislative repeal.
