An apartment building in downtown Shanghai caught fire during renovations Monday, killing at least 42 people and injuring more than 90.

The fire engulfed the 28-story building, which houses 156 families, for more than four hours Monday afternoon. Many residents are still unaccounted for.

Fire hoses had to be set up on top of nearby buildings to reach the top half of the apartment complex.

Though the cause of the fire has not been identified, the state-run news Web site Eastday.com reported that construction workers were installing energy-efficient insulation when the fire broke out.
