Polling places and ballot drop-offs are open until 8 p.m. in Washington, but don’t expect a winner to be declared Tuesday night in the state’s hotly contested Senate race.

The latest Rasmussen Reports poll puts Democratic Incumbent Patty Murray a percentage point behind Republican challenger Dino Rossi.

With most of the state’s voters submitting their ballots by mail, it may take days before a winner is declared.  If the original vote count is close, less than 2,000 votes separating the candidates or less than a half percent of total votes separates the candidates, a recount will be called for.

While the counting of ballots may begin prior to 8 p.m., there is no word yet on which candidate may be holding an early lead.
