South Carolina Seeing Heavy Voter Turnout
The South Carolina State Election Commission reported that the voter turnout today was “moderate to heavy.” Long lines were found at many of the polling places.
Marci Andino, the executive director of the SC State Election Commission said, “Today’s high voter turnout is a huge testament to the citizens of South Carolina and their dedication to making their voices heard by casting a ballot in today’s election.”
In addition, more than 142,000 absentee ballots were cast, and many are still being counted. This more than doubles the amount of absentee voting seen in previous midterm elections.
Polling places reported heavy traffic since polls opened in the morning. Some polling places also had machine breakdowns, adding to the wait for voters.
The massive voter turnout raises questions of whether this will break state turnout records for midterm elections. Key elections on the ballot include the 1st Congressional District and Gubernatorial races.
Polls will officially close at 7 p.m. Voters not in line by 7 will not be allowed to cast their votes.
