The L.A. Auto Show, which opens to the public Friday, Nov. 19, offers a curious mix.

On the one hand, manufacturers will use this event to thrust their most innovative clean-energy concept cars to the forefront, when years ago it looked like the electric car was dead. The latest wave of electric car buzz may be more than hype, according to the L.A. Times

The widely-praised Chevy Volt, which won Motor Trend’s 2011 “Car of the Year” award, will be on display. Also making their mark will be the Honda’s Fit EV Concept and the Nissan LEAF Electric Car. In addition, Chrysler will promote its new Fiat 500 subcompact model.

There will, of course, be a few oddball concepts, like this one from Kia.

Eco-friendly cars are not the only ones getting attention, though.

Lotus, a British sports car manufacturer, will show off several flashy new models in its lineup. The company is hailing its new roster of cars as a “new era.” These vehicles will share the room with a fleet of imposing Rolls-Royce vehicles and Aston Martins.

Even in these economic times – and even with the hype surrounding electric cars – no auto show would be complete without these highly impractical items.
