Senate Passes Food Safety Bill

A bill calling for sweeping reforms to the country’s food-safety system passed the Senate on Tuesday by a vote of 73 to 25.

The vote comes on the heels of several recalls of tainted eggs, peanut butter and spinach that made thousands of people sick nationwide. 

The bill, which is backed by the Obama administration, increases the power of the Food and Drug Administration and calls for a significant uptick in government oversight to try to prevent outbreaks before they happen. 

The legislation has received support from both sides of the aisle, but it could still fail if the House and the Senate do not manage to agree on a version of the bill between now and the end of the year.
