Republican Rand Paul, one of several Tea Party darlings to have entered the national spotlight, has surged in the polls over the past week and is now likely to win a spot in the Senate representing Kentucky.

Nate Silver's FiveThirtyEight gives Paul a 99.7 percent likelihood of stealing the race from Democrat Jack Conway.
