Virginia Thomas, wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, decided to relinquish her role as the leader of Liberty Central, a conservative Tea Party group she helped establish last May, a spokesperson said Monday.

According to a conversation between Washington Post reporter Amy Gardner and CRC Public Relations spokeswoman Caitlin Carroll, Liberty Central is planning on merging with the Patrick Henry Center for Individual Liberty in Manassas, Va, a conservative non-profit group.

In addition, Thomas will decrease her involvement in Liberty Central. The Post quotes Carroll as stating that Thomas will, "take a back seat so that Liberty Central can continue with its mission without any of the distractions,” that come with being a political celebrity of sorts.

However, Leonard Leo, an executive at the conservative Federalist Society and longtime friend the Thomas’s said, “There have been absolutely no discussions with the board about her stepping down. “The bottom line is she hasn’t made any decisions about what she wants to do and I don’t think just knowing her and knowing what’s transpired over the last few months that she’s going to make any decisions based on a spat of press stories about a single phone call that she made. That’s not her personality and that’s not how she would make a business decision.”

Virginia Thomas, commonly known as “Ginni”, helped established Liberty Central as a conservative response to what she has called a “power grab” by the Obama administration.

Thomas’s celebrity status brought a lot of attention to Liberty Central and along with her husband, helped raise a substantial amount of money for the group.
