Newly elected governor Jerry Brown quickly acknowledged his victory Wednesday and made it clear he is ready to work.

Brown held a press conference in Oakland at his campaign headquarters to speak about his win and future plans.

Brown said he would try to make laws “exhausting and inclusive” while listening to the people’s voice. He said he would not introduce new taxes until Californians made it clear they wanted them.

Promising to pare down waste and low-priority spending, Brown said he once told people, “If you want frugality, I’m your man.”

After a close race against Republican Meg Whitman, Brown took the lead early on Tuesday night. Winning the governor’s seat for the third time, Brown received 54 percent of the vote.

Expecting difficult discussions ahead, Brown said he would try to provide clarity to a divided electorate. He said the electorate was very much divided by party last night and presumed they would continue to be divided moving forward.

He looks at the next couple months as a period to “learn, study, forge relations” to help him move forward in January. This will help Brown in his goal to push everyone towards a “common purpose” in improving California.

He has already been in touch with leaders in the Senate and Assembly and is traveling to Sacramento tomorrow.
