Former U.S. Senator Carol Moseley Braun announced her run for Chicago Mayor Saturday.

She faces tough competition from former White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel.

Braun last race won a race in 1992 when she became the first black woman in the U.S. Senate. She lost re-election to the Senate in 1998, but has since served as ambassador to New Zealand and as the owner of a coffee, tea and spice company.

The former U.S. Senator may have to come to terms with some past missteps during her bid for mayor, which include accusations about the misuse of campaign money as well as a meeting with a Nigerian dictator.

In addition to Emanuel, Braun will compete against state Sen. James Meeks, U.S. Rep. Danny Davis, Chicago City Clerk Miguel del Valle and former Chicago school board president Gery Chico.
