Philadelphia Phillies vs. San Francisco Giants

Game 6 recap: Philadephia’s Roy Oswalt went head to head with the Giants’ Jonathan Sanchez, in a game where the Phils needed a win to stay alive.

Both teams got their bats going early. Chase Utley and Jayson Werth drove in runs in the first inning, making the score 2-0. The Giants answered in the third inning after Aubrey Huff’s single brought Sanchez home, and Huff scored later when Buster Posey reached first base on an error by Ryan Howard.

After five scoreless innings, an opposite field, solo homer by Juan Uribe put the Giants on top in the eighth. In the bottom of the inning, Tim Lincecum came to the mound for his first relief appearance since April 2008, and was less than spectacular. After he allowed two hits, the Giants brought in closer Brian Wilson in hopes of sealing the deal.

Philly fans got loud when Wilson walked two players in the ninth, but after two outs Wilson struck out Ryan Howard looking in dramatic fashion on a 3-2 count, propelling the Giants to their first World Series appearance since 2002.

Key moment: The Giants were able to avert a crisis in the fifth inning after rookie Madison Bumgarner loaded the bases in the fifth.  Bumgarner got Shane Victorino to ground back to the mound to end the inning, and the Phillies weren’t able to get anything going again.

Game changer: Juan Uribe hit the first pitch he saw from Phillies' reliever Ryan Madson into the right field seats. His home run took it from anyone’s game to a Giants advantage.

Play of the game:
Uribe again! His home run made him the first National League player since 1975 to knock two game-winning RBIs in a postseason series.

Unsung hero: Though Madison Bumgarner scared Giants fans by loading up the bases in the fifth, he got of it and pitched two scoreless innings on just two days rest from his Game 4 start.

Quotes of game:  “Not bad for a bunch of castoffs and misfits.”—Giants manager Bruce Bochy.

“I hope you guys are going absolutely ballistic, cause we’re gonna get on a flight tomorrow, and we’re gonna join you.  FACT.”—Brian Wilson, when asked to deliver a message to fans celebrating the win in San Francisco.
