More than 1,500 superheroes joined forces Saturday morning to break the Guinness World Records title for "Largest Gathering of Superheroes."

1,580 superheroes broke the previous record of 1,501 set in August.

Children and adults ran around L.A. Live and played games, took pictures and ate complimentary fresh spun cotton candy, cupcakes and cookies.

The event was hosted by DreamWorks Animation and was held to promote the new release of Will Ferrell's animated 3D superhero movie, "Megamind."

Ferrell said hello to the screaming crowd and shook as many hands as he could before being whisked away for interviews.

"We'd love it if you guys could break another world record and stay in your costumes for the entire month. No showers, commit," said Ferrell to a laughing audience.

"Megamind," directed by Tom McGrath, is about the supervillian Megamind (voice of Will Ferrell), who defeats good guy Metro Man (Brad Pitt) but finds out that his life is meaningless without an arch nemesis to battle against. The movie releases November 5.

Although comic book writer Stan Lee is not in "Megamind," he was on hand to answer questions about what his superpower of choice would be (luck), his favorite superhero ("obviously Spiderman"), and his thoughts on being such a prolific writer, artist and actor: "The reason I like to do a lot of projects is because there's a better chance of getting cameos."
