The Sorority Girl From The Sidelines: USC Beats Cal
My name is Kristen Rodgers and I’m currently a freshman Broadcast Journalism student at USC. I’m also a Delta Gamma and life long sports nut here to give you the highlights and updates on all things sports.
More or less, I’m just a Sorority Girl from the Sidelines.
The place: the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The scene: the Trojans taking on the California Golden Bears. The energy level of the crowd: off the charts!
Just like the final score against Cal (48-14). Our boys overwhelmed the Bears right from the opening drive and kept them scoreless until late in the third quarter.
Also off the charts was Matt Barkley and his five touchdown passes to tie the USC record for most touchdown passes in a game. Now that’s the kind of quarterback I want playing on my team!
There have been some critics of our defense, but Nickell Robey, Shareece Wright and the studly Nick Perry promptly shut them up. They kept Kevin Riley looking frantic all game and definitely earned a big “A” in my book.
And move aside Freshman 15 because the Freshman 13 is the whole new rage. Robert Woods once again played an unbelievable game with seven catches and over 100 yards against Cal. Woods and Ronald Johnson showed off fast feet and quick hands with two touchdown catches apiece. Marc Tyler also strutted his stuff with a touchdown of his own and 79 rushing yards -- almost as far as I have to go rushing between Writing 140 and Taper Hall…
And, to my delight, my favorite three-word phrase was spoken often on Saturday: “First and goal.” What girl doesn’t love hearing those words over and over while watching the Cardinal and Gold score 42 points and hold the Golden Bears scoreless in the first half?
A personal note to Lane Kiffin, Monte Kiffin and the rest of the coaching staff: kudos and a big giant hug to all of you because your coaching was beautiful.
From the blitzes to the running patterns, everything was picture perfect. You all were the foundation of the wall our team built that Cal ran into.
As for the fans, the electricity coming from the sidelines was enough to light up this gloomy L.A. weather and bring some shining light to our football team.
Our past two heartbreakers against Washington and Stanford look like they are a thing of the past. The Trojans are new and improved. Our offense has the speed and smarts to score at will. And on Saturday it did. Our defense delivered in a big way too, keeping Cal’s scoring and its cheering to a minimum.
Quick fashion note: student section, you all looked way more spirited and fierce than those Bears in their bumble bee polos. The body paint and beads really were a nice touch.
We face off against the Ducks on Oct. 30 and all I can say is that bear hunting season is over. I think I hear some quacking in the distance.
Keeping it real as ever, the Sorority Girl from the Sidelines.
