The Sorority Girl From The Sidelines: Giants Poised To Finish Off Phillies

My name is Kristen Rodgers and I’m currently a freshman Broadcast Journalism student at USC. I’m also a Delta Gamma and life long sports nut here to give you the highlights and updates on all things sports.

More or less, I’m just a Sorority Girl from the Sidelines.

I’m going to have to get a manicure after all of that nail-biting action on Wednesday.

The Giants were able to pull out a 6-5 victory in Game 5 courtesy of Juan Uribe’s sacrifice fly ball in the bottom of the ninth.   So, after almost four hours of neck-and-neck play, the Gigantes lead the Phillies 3-1 in the NLCS.

While the past three games have been pitching duels, the pitching was a little erratic Wednesday.

Giants starter Madison Bumgarner was pulled in the fifth inning after he let in a run. He was replaced by Santiago Casilla, who continued the Giants’ downward dip by giving up three more fifth inning runs, one of them on a wild pitch.

But it wasn’t just the boys in black and orange that were a bit off tonight, the Phillies brought in one of their best starters, Roy Oswalt, in the ninth inning to close the game -- an interesting strategy to say the least.

Back to the Giants’ pitching staff, my favorite ninja earned himself yet another save by pitching a perfect ninth inning. Brian Wilson claimed he had butterflies and a mini-ulcer, but his performance showed no sign of possible emergency room care.

As B-Willy pointed out in his post-game interview, he wasn’t the only hero for the Giants tonight. Cody Ross was once again boss, despite being hit by Phillies pitcher Joe Blanton -- an alleged accident, but after Cole Hamels’ joke about slowing Buster Posey down with a wild pitch, who can know for sure…

But it was my favorite rookie (soon to be Rookie of the Year) Buster Posey who ruled this game.

Posey was a force to be reckoned with, both at and behind the plate. He had an RBI double in the first inning and a run-scoring single in the third. He added a seventh inning double as well, much to the delight of the San Fran fans.

Posey also brought the crowd to its feat by tagging out Carlos Ruiz at the plate for a picture-perfect play.

No one should count out the Phillies though. Their hitting from behind was un-friggin-believeable. Shane Victorino singled to center, Placido Polanco hit a two-run double, and Ryan Howard and Jayson Werth both stepped up in the infamous fifth inning to give the Phillies a 4-2 lead.

Werth continued to show just how werth-y (bad pun, I know, I got it from one of the Phillies’ signs) he was by hitting an RBI double in the eigth tying up the score.

The Giants and the Phillies were both on their "A" games in Game 4 and Game 5 is sure to be yet another thrilling game. Both starting pitchers, Tim Lincecum and Roy Halladay, are big-time competitors.

So break out the eye-black for the game. And don’t forget the panda hats, you Bay City Ballers! After Pablo Sandoval’s big hit Wednesday, we owe it to him to wear them.

And for the Phillies fans out there, break out the holiday outfits for Halladay and get ready to rally for your team!

Keeping it classy in Orange October, the Sorority Girl from the Sidelines.
