Republican Rand Paul's campaign terminated its relationship Tuesday with a volunteer who stomped on an activist's head after she was wrestled to the ground before a debate in Lexington, Kentucky on Monday.

Tim Profitt, Paul's former Bourbon County campaign coordinator, admitted he stepped on MoveOn.org activist Lauren Valle's head, but he said in an interview that the incident, which was caught on video, was not as bad as it looked.

"I'm sorry that it came to that, and I apologize if it appeared overly forceful, but I was concerned about Rand's safety," Profitt said to The Associated Press.

The campaign also barred Profitt from attending any of its events.

Valle, 23, went to the debate to present Paul with a fake "employee of the month" award from the fictitious RepubliCorp, a group that's said to represent the merge of business interests and the GOP. But before she could hand Rand the award she was forced to the ground and pinned by one man while Profitt stepped on her.

Paul is running against Democrat Jack Conway to represent Kentucky in the U.S. Senate.
