President Donald Trump?
A recent poll in New Hampshire asked voters about potential Republican Party candidates for the 2012 presidential election. Donald Trump was one of the people featured in the poll with 30 questions, asking voter's things like if Trump’s television career would affect his campaign.
Trump says that we are “losing this country” and that if nothing is done to fix the problems we are facing, America will lose the respect of other nations. The New York based billionaire insists that he was not the one who paid for the New Hampshire poll, but recognizes that its results are interesting. Trump has stated that if he were to run for president in 2012, he would campaign as a Republican.
I just don’t see Donald Trump as the person who is going to come in and save our nation. Sure he may have the savvy business sense that might pull our economy out the hole it’s currently in, but I just can’t get over the image of Donald Trump sitting in the oval office with his crazy hair looking at one of his advisors and saying, “you’re fired.” Since the story was released, that’s the only role I see Trump playing; I can’t find a way to take him seriously.
This situation reminds me of when Arnold Schwarzenegger was elected governor of California. When he first started campaigning, I thought that it was a joke. I thought that there was no way that an oversized action hero would seriously be running for governor. I feel the same way about Donald Trump. Is he really going to run? If he does and makes a significant run for the presidency, I’m going to be even more concerned about our nation than I am now. It will just go to show the world how obsessed our nation is with celebrities and being on TV. We have already proven that we can elect an actor to be governor, so electing a TV personality as president is apparently the next logical step.
Since nothing official has been announced and this is all hypothetical at this point, let’s say that Donald Trump runs for President of the United States and wins. Who is going to be in his cabinet? Is he going to round up other TV personalities to fill all the positions? I can see the All-Star cabinet with Jeff Probst as Secretary of State, Alex Trebek as Secretary of the Treasury and, of course, Chuck Norris as Secretary of Defense. This actually might be the dream scenario for some TV addicts out there. It might not work out in the end, but it would be nothing short of amazing to watch that play out.
I understand being upset with our elected officials right now, but knee-jerk reactions aren’t going to solve anything. Donald Trump may eventually end up putting together a platform and campaign for votes, but voting for him, or someone else who claims to have distanced him or herself from the political system as it stands today, probably isn’t the best solution we have. Radical change for the sake of radical change may do more harm than good. Granted some changes need to be made, but doing it one step at a time is going to be better in the long run than something drastic like electing Donald Trump as president.
I will be watching with great anticipation to see if Trump actually makes a serious run at the White House, and if he does, will people support and vote for him. If he does end up getting a significant amount of support, I hope that the current members of our government realize that the American people are so fed up with the current situation, that they would resort to voting Donald Trump for president and make some changes.
