Pirates Invade Catalina Island

It was an invasion of the boisterous, but friendly, type this weekend as the little community of Two Harbors hosted a passel of pirates for the 21st annual Buccaneer’s Day.

Events included children’s and adult’s costume contests, music, dancing and several impromptu limbo competitions.

There were a lot of pirates on Catalina this weekend, but one pirate in particular stood out from the crowd. It may have been the metal hook, it may have been the live parrot perched on his shoulder or it may have been the fact that he had a pirate ship moored in the harbor, but whatever the reason, he was memorable.

His name is Morgan, according to “Stormin’” Norma, the lady-pirate in his life, but he does not go by “Captain” Morgan.  Morgan, Norma and Samantha the parrot were very hospitable, and set the tone for a great day. Though Morgan and Norma set the gold standard for pirate impersonation, they were far from the only people to get into the spirit of the day, and intricate pirate costumes abounded.

Two Harbors, the location of the Buccaneer’s Day celebration, is normally a quiet place to do some snorkeling or take part in other outdoor activities.  It is only a short trip away from USC's Wrigley Institute.

Buccaneer’s Day is usually held on the first Saturday of October in Two Harbors. The small community can be reached via Catalina Express, a ferry service that leaves from San Pedro every day of the week.  Round trip tickets were about $66 per person.  People often begin reserving camping sites a year in advance for the event.
