When President Barack Obama speaks on USC’s campus Friday, you can expect big things -- big crowds, big traffic jams and big security presence.

But for this event, City of Los Angeles officials are hoping to avoid enormous traffic back-ups like those caused during his August visit.

"I talked to the White House and told them we didn't want to see a repeat of what happened on his last trip," said Councilman Bill Rosendahl, who is chairman of the council's Transportation Committee. "They were understanding and said they would take that in consideration."

Though some details have not been released yet, visitors should prepare for lots of waiting. Here are the answers to your questions such as "Where is the Obama USC rally," "Where to park for the Obama USC rally," "How to get to the Obama USC rally," "What roads are closed for the Obama USC rally," and "What's the security for the Obama USC rally."

Getting There

USC officials are encouraging visitors to take public transit, including the LADOT Dash F Bus or one of Metro's several bus routes running near USC such as the 38, 81, 102, 200, 204, 442, 550 and 754. As of Wednesday, both LADOT and Metro say routes will run as normal.

Late Wednesday, the Los Angeles Police Department announced several roads south of the USC campus will be closed. Basically all roads around the perimeter of the Los Angeles Coliseum will be closed from mid-morning to mid-afternoon. Specifically, the closures are:

  • Martin Luther King Boulevard between Figueroa Street and Vermont Avenue to through vehicle traffic from 9:30 a.m. until 11:25 a.m. and to all traffic from 11:25 a.m. until 2:50 p.m.
  • Vermont Avenue between Martin Luther King Boulevard and Exposition Boulevard to through vehicle traffic from 9:30 a.m. until 11:25 a.m. and all traffic from 11:25 a.m. until 2:50 p.m.
  • Figueroa Street between Martin Luther King Boulevard and 39th Street to through vehicle traffic from 9:30 a.m. until 11:25 a.m. and all traffic from 11:25 a.m. until 2:50 p.m.
  • Exposition Boulevard between Vermont Avenue and Figueroa Street from 11:25 a.m. until 2:50 p.m.

Visitors driving to the event can park in parking garages around campus for $8, including Parking Structure One, which is located off of Flower Street between 39th Street and 39th Place.

USC Transportation officials sent an email to the university community Wednesday suggesting that PSX, which is located at USC McCarthy Way and Figueroa Street, and PSA, which is located at McClintock Avenue and Downey Way, will be closed. The closures have not yet been confirmed. Overflow parking will be available at the Parking Center, located at 35th Street and Grand Avenue.

Getting In

The program starts at 11 a.m., but rally-goers will be allowed to enter an hour before. Overnight stays won’t be allowed, but lines will still be long, so guests are urged to come early. USC Transportation officials said they are expecting about 30,000 people to attend. Everyone must enter through security screening on Trousdale Parkway south of 34th Street. Jamie Foxx and Ozomatli have been called on to entertain the crowd.

Don’t bring posters, food or drinks, laptops, folding chairs or backpacks.

Obama will speak from the steps of Doheny Memorial Library, which is located in the middle of campus east of Trousdale Parkway.

Watt Way, a stretch of campus that houses several engineering buildings, and parts of Downey Way, a main entrance to campus from Vermont Avenue, will be closed when Obama arrives at USC, said Tony Mazza, director of USC Transportation. People using Childs Way, a main thoroughfare near where Tommy Trojan is located, will be directed elsewhere.

For USC Students

Bicycles won’t be allowed in certain areas of campus from Thursday at 5 p.m. until Friday at 5 p.m. These areas include Downey Way, between Trousdale Parkway and Stonier Hall; 34th Street, south of Parking Structure B; and Childs Way, on the north side of the Tutor Campus Center.

A few buildings will be affected throughout the day, but most will operate as normal. Doheny Memorial Library and the Gwynn Wilson Student Union will be the only two buildings completely closed. The Von KleinSmid Center, Bovard Administration Building and the Tutor Campus Center will be partially closed, though it is not yet clear what the partial closures will mean.

Campus shuttles won’t be running through, dropping off or picking up passengers on campus between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m., Mazza said. Instead, tram users looking to be dropped off or picked up near campus must go to Jefferson Boulevard and Hoover Street.
